Key Takeaways

  • Q3 2026 year-over-year software spend growth by segment: SMB +3%, mid-market +4%, enterprise +26%.
  • Mid-market growth fell from 27.16% in Q2 to about 4% in Q3, the biggest swing of any segment this year.
  • Enterprise accelerated from 19.11% to about 26%, now growing roughly 6x faster than mid-market and more than 8x faster than SMB.
  • SMB has held near 3% for three straight quarters: 3.5% in Q1, 3.30% in Q2 and about 3% in Q3.

Enterprise companies are now driving software spend growth almost on their own. Tropic's Q3 2026 network data, drawn from more than $25B in spend under management, shows enterprise software spend up about 26% year over year, while mid-market slowed to about 4% and SMB held at about 3%. One quarter ago, mid-market was the fastest-growing segment in the market.

A few things stand out:

  • Enterprise is the only segment still growing fast. At about 26%, enterprise spend grew faster than in either Q1 or Q2.
  • Mid-market fell back to SMB's pace. After leading the market in Q2, mid-market spend growth now sits just one point above SMB.
  • SMB hasn't moved. Three quarters in a row near 3% makes SMB the most predictable segment in the data.

How Does Q3 Compare to Q2 and Q1?

In Q1 2026, mid-market and enterprise grew at the same rate, both around 20% year over year. In Q2 they split, with mid-market jumping to 27.16% while enterprise held at 19.11%. In our Q2 analysis, we said a third data point would show which of those two quarters was the outlier.

Q3 answered that and then some. Mid-market didn't just give back its Q2 gains. It fell to about 4%, a fraction of its Q1 pace. Enterprise moved the other way, accelerating to about 26%, its fastest growth of the year.

The gap between the two segments flipped from 8 points in mid-market's favor to roughly 22 points in enterprise's favor in a single quarter.

Why Did Mid-Market Software Spend Growth Slow So Sharply?

Mid-market companies stopped paying more for the stack they already had. In Q2, mid-market growth was spread across every category: AI-native, Hybrid SaaS + AI and Primarily SaaS all grew more than 20%. In Q3, growth in both legacy categories nearly stopped. Hybrid SaaS + AI spend grew under 1%, and Primarily SaaS spend grew under 5%. The full breakdown is in our Q3 AI-native and SaaS spend by category analysis.

A few likely contributors:

  • Consolidation caught up with mid-market. Tropic's Q3 adoption data shows all 15 of the most-used mid-market tools lost adoption from Q2. Fewer tools per company means slower spend growth, even when the tools that remain get more expensive. See our Q3 software adoption analysis for the tool-by-tool view.
  • Renewal timing. In Q2, we flagged that some of mid-market's jump might reflect which contracts happened to renew that quarter. A reversal this large in one quarter supports that read. Mid-market's Q2 surge looks more like a renewal cluster than a lasting trend.
  • Pushback on retrofitted AI. Mid-market Hybrid SaaS + AI spend went from the fastest-growing legacy category in Q2 to nearly flat in Q3. After a quarter of absorbing AI-driven uplifts, mid-market buyers appear to be saying no to the next round.

Mid-market still has the lock-in without enterprise's leverage. What changed in Q3 is that mid-market teams found the places they could cut, and used them.

Why Did Enterprise Software Spend Accelerate?

Enterprise growth is coming from two places at once: AI-native tools and core systems of record. Enterprise AI-native spend grew 462.71% year over year in Q3, more than double Q2's already record pace. Enterprise Primarily SaaS spend grew 46.64%, accelerating for the second straight quarter.

Two dynamics are likely at work:

  • AI-native usage is scaling with consumption. Enterprise teams that proved out AI use cases earlier in the year are now expanding across functions, and usage-based pricing lets that spend climb as fast as adoption does.
  • Systems of record are getting more expensive. Enterprises can't easily walk away from their core CRM, HR, data and identity platforms, and those vendors are raising prices, often by bundling AI into renewals. Our AI tax analysis covers how that pricing shows up.

Enterprises also have the budget to absorb both at once. Mid-market companies, facing the same pressures, are choosing between them.

Why Is SMB Software Spend Growth So Flat?

SMBs are trading, not adding. SMB AI-native spend grew 152.67% in Q3, while SMB spend on Primarily SaaS fell 3.39%. The net result is a total budget that barely moves.

Smaller companies have the most flexibility to swap tools, downgrade tiers or delay purchases, and they're using it to fund AI adoption out of their existing budgets instead of growing them.

What Should Finance and Procurement Teams Do About This?

If you're an enterprise: your software budget is likely growing faster than you planned. Prioritize the two biggest drivers.

  • Put guardrails on AI-native consumption. At 462.71% growth, AI-native spend can outrun any annual budget. Set usage caps, monitor consumption monthly and negotiate rate tables before usage scales further. Tropic's guide to managing AI costs covers the internal controls.
  • Separate the AI line item from the base renewal. If a system-of-record vendor bundles AI into your existing SKU, ask what the price would be without it.
  • Push for a rate lock, not just a discount. A multi-year rate cap written into the contract protects you at the next renewal. A one-time concession doesn't.

If you're mid-market: the slowdown is an opportunity, not just a pause.

  • Keep consolidating. If your peers are cutting tools and you aren't, you're likely paying for overlap they've already removed. Audit usage before every renewal, a point Michael Shields, Tropic's VP of Procurement, makes often: most software bloat comes from nobody checking whether a tool still earns its place.
  • Use the market's pushback. Vendors selling to mid-market just saw spend growth stall. They have more reason to negotiate now than at any point this year.

If you're an SMB: keep trading. Funding AI-native tools by cutting legacy SaaS is working. Bring substitution alternatives to every Primarily SaaS renewal.

Everyone: benchmark before you're in the room. Go into every renewal with a number from a real comparable deal using Tropic's price benchmarks.

What to Watch in Q4 2026

  • Whether mid-market's slowdown holds. Q2 looked like a surge, and Q3 looks like a correction. Q4 will show which is closer to mid-market's real growth rate.
  • Whether enterprise AI-native growth keeps compounding. Growth near 463% isn't sustainable for long. Watch for the first sign of cooling as finance teams tighten AI budgets for 2027.
  • Budget season pressure. Q4 is when most companies set 2027 software budgets. Expect vendors to push AI-inclusive SKUs and multi-year renewals before those budgets lock.
